HIghly Recommended - Significant Experience

Throughout late 2007 and 2009 I made five business trips to Johannesburg from New York totaling about three and a half months. During three of these trips I probably spent about seven weeks at Graton, and stayed at five other LGBT owned or accepting guest houses. Graton was the most comfortable reception of all, and turned me from a fan of "Business Traveler Hotels" like Southern Sun or the Mapungubwe down town, to an avid fan of Johannesburg's guest houses.

The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and most are on the large side, and the Guest House itself and common areas display Tony and Graham's eclectic take on South African art, culture, and theater. My favorite feature, as a shameful smoker, was the pool, which opens to the common area of the Guest House, and led to many fascinating conversations with the other guests.

The neighborhood, Norwood, is safe enough that I felt comfortable walking from the guest house to the restaurants about 10 minutes away. Amongst which, Picalo Primadona (sp?) is excellent. A strong dollar (it was then) led to some amazing meals and many bottles of wine. Nearby Melville is perhaps more night life oriented, but Norwood was perfect when working and a great place to start on the weekends.

Tony and Graham are a wealth of knowledge about the history of LGBT rights in South Africa, and Graham is a certified tour guide -- we had a great trip to a nearby Lion and Rhino park. Think of it as a safari via day trip.

I couldn't recommend Graton more highly.

If you need a place o stay away from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, Graton is it! The hosts are extremely accommodating and wonderful to be around. It was such a pleasure to find this place and we were sad that we had to leave it, but will definitely stay there when we return!
